Belly Dance is for everyone no matter the age. It is just one of the very few dance forms where you can say that…actually it may be the only; one more specifically if we are talking about advancing to professional level but lets not focus there.

Over my years of being a belly dancer myself of just now 23 years; I have heard oh I am too old or she is too young, or belly dance for kids? I believe I have written about this a time or too but it has been on my mind a lot more recently. I have had discussed this countless of times with current students, soon to be students about the topic. In general, most of the women believe that they are too old for belly dance….what qualifies for too old??? You have got me!!! But, generally speaking I am going to guess that society suggests on average if you are over 30; your too old…this is far from true!

I myself have had the privilege to teach all women from the age of 3-98! I know it is truly crazy that it can be true but WoW all of these women have amazed me! The average age of women stepping into there first class is age anywhere from 40-50, then we do have those exceptions of course, taking their first belly dance class beyond 75 and up!

Have you thought about trying out classes and then thought, but I am too old? Have you suggested it to someone a friend and you got that are you kidding me look? No matter what I am here to tell you that belly dance is for everyone!

My dream

My dream. To have a space that is safe, open and inviting. To allow those to come to the space as they are. To be themselves. To be authentic and genuine.

I have been thinking a lot about being able to show up in the world as yourself without a mask or pretending you are something your not. My studio Hip Love Studio a dream coming true. Last night, before class a student arrived and excitedly says “I am in my pajamas tonight”

I just loved this that first she was super comfortable enough to come as she was! I want you to be yourself, to shine your light, to show up in the most genuine way. Dance and movement does teach you this. It also teaches us to be confident in ourselves, in our own bodies and skin.

My question I asked my students: besides the studio is there anywhere else you can go that you feel comfortable enough to be YOU? Everyone had to think long and hard and the only comment was Walmart. We should be able to go anywhere and to be ourselves to feel safe, supported, welcomed. These are all basic human needs and when we do not feel safe or supported it can cause a ton of stress and who needs more of that?

Last night at the studio we had 2 full amazing classes of amazing women. I am in awe of these women incidentally all ages from 10 on up! They showed up as themselves and for themselves! That is such an amazing gift we can actually give ourselves and others! They are learning more about who they are and connecting within their own bodies because that is where it starts. Introducing Hip Love Studio. New name. New look. I am so excited to announce my dance studio space now has a new name. Hip Love Studio. H. I. P healing in physical Love. Empowering women to feel good. Welcome to Najlas Dance & Healing.

Change is inevitable and good as it changes the energy and flow so things can become less stagnate and it shakes things up a bit. Why this change? I wanted something simple, to the point, easy to remember but different. I wanted and needed something that truly encompasses all that I can offer as I am more:

Allie Joseph who is sole owner of Najlas Dance and Hip Love serves Chillicothe, Ohio and surrounding areas. To empower women, giving them confidence and find what has been lost deep within though, fitness, dance, movement classes for women of all ages! Why the name Hip Love?

In bellydance we use our hips, it is the foundation that connects our lower body to our upper body. It relates to our pelvic and core region. When we dance our hip flexors are highly active which changes the flow and helps us release feeling better. Over the years in research and tons of learning! I love to learn! Our hips hold most of our emotion! Did you know that?

Think of your hips as a junk drawer. Everyone has one. A junk drawer is where you put things away that you do not know what to do with. It keeps filling up and before you know it your are holding onto so much junk in your hips that you do not even realize it. This is the most simplest terms. Our hips hold stress, anger, anxiety, trauma and more and these signals get sent to our whole body. From movement, meditation, dance, energy healing we can break this cycle and start feeling better, lighter, free!

Most Common Questions Asked

Through my many years of teaching often there are several questions that are asked by potential students. These also can be known as myths about the dance in general. Today I will address Just a few questions for you.

“Do I need to know how to dance” or I will often get statements: “I can’t dance.”

First off you do not need to know how to dance! If you knew how to dance then I would not have a job as a teacher. I will teach you, lead you and guide you! When I started 22 years ago, I did not know how to dance. I learned by going to class with various teachers who I studied under. We all start at the same place. The statement: “But I can’t dance” is a common one. Anyone can learn how with practice and patience and being involved in class. Anyone can learn! We learn how to move our body through breaking down movement, drilling and having fun!

“Do I need to show my belly”

This is a very common question. Most people think that when they learn how to bellydance they have to show their belly. This is absolutely untrue. Belly Dance does focus on the core; hence the belly but also involves the hips. It has been known as dance of the stomach because of the undulations that are often seen. Did you know that in Egypt that dancers are not allowed to show their belly? Often they are seen showing a belly cover which is mesh and can be skin color or even the same color as their costume! You will even see them in a dress where the belly is completed covered. Honestly, it is totally up to you! If you want to flaunt your belly go ahead! If not no that it is ok too! There have been many times I myself have danced with my belly covered! Checkout the photo below to see how lovely it can be.

“Am I too old/young?”

I often hear the statement but I am too old more often then not. I am asked how young I teach and I have taught many ages all across the board from as young as 3 years of age to 85! This dance is truly for anyone know matter what the age. Within different age groups it can be presented slightly different based on the general ability of class. Did you know that bellydance is one of the very few dance forms where you can start out at a later age? It is more common then you think! The average age is 40 years of age. There is really something for everyone in this dance no matter how old you are! Look below and you will find the many different ages that have walked through my studio doors. Look at all the beauties! I have so many pictures!

“What do you wear to class?”

Most of my students come in wearing leggings, yoga pants and a top they are comfortable in. It is great to have a hip scarf as it helps accent the hips and will allow you to feel the movement of the hips. Need one? I have some for sale at the studio! We dance barefoot so we can be really connected to the ground. If you would rather you can also purchase a type of dance shoe. something flat and that will not restrict your movement of your feet. You can get something that covers the full foot or only the toes or half of the foot. There are lots of options from something basic or something with a bit of sparkle!

Who are you really?

Who are you really? What do people see? Each one of us put on many different hats and we are so many different things to different people. We are parents, daughters, siblings, friends, the list can go on and on. We often identify ourselves at this first level. When we speak about it we may say; “Oh I am just a ____________________. Ok yes you are, but honestly you are so much more then that! We tend to put ourselves in a box/category; unable to see our true identity! Over the years, since being part of Global Caravan and doing certifications and training there is a little exercise we do that allows you to see that you are more then just a mom, dancer, or friend.

Here is a little fun thing to do to get you truly thinking who you are beneath the surface! Grab a pen and paper and start each sentence with I am. I am a mother, daughter and so forth very basic. Just write do not think just let the words flow onto the page. Once you are done now write “But really I am” Tap into your soul and your core. Who are you really? There is so much more then what meets the eye!

I am part of a writing course with Paulette Rees-Denis that started the beginning of the year and I have done this exercise many times before and each time it comes out different and completely amazing!

Age has no limit

Age has no limit and therefore is never too late to try something new. Age does not defy you on how you should look, act or be. This past weekend in both my classes this subject came up where one of my students she mentioned told someone who just happened to be younger that they were taking dance classes and the comment was you, really?

Ageism What is it?

Ageism definition:
Ageism, also spelled agism, is stereotyping and/or discrimination against individuals or groups on the basis of their age. This may be casual or systemic. The term was coined in 1969 by Robert Neil Butler to describe discrimination against seniors, and patterned on sexism and racism. Butler defined “ageism” as a combination of three connected elements. Originally it was identified chiefly towards older people, old age, and the aging process; discriminatory practices against older people; and institutional practices and policies that perpetuate stereotypes about elderly people

I honestly had not heard of ageism but we talked about it in both of my classes and it turned into a good discussion. This is something I have come across myself; not just in dance but how I dress and look. Why do we allow a number to define how we look, feel or what we do?

A bit of story

Today I am going to share a bit of a story of getting older in regards to this subject. My mom would always say to me as I got older. When are you cutting your hair? It is to long for you now that you are getting older. My reply to her was never I will never cut it and I am just going to let it grow down to my butt and I did! It was my way to say I will never allow my age to define me.

We have grown so accustomed to this thought process that society says when we hit are 30’s, 40’s 50’s 60’s and even going into our 70s this is what we should do, not do, dress and or be. Why can we not be yourself? Why do we have to put a limit on ourselves.

Over the past years through my teaching; I have had the honor of teaching women of all ages! This dance is truly for everyone and age does not matter! Most of the women that come through my doors; the average age of when they start is in their 40s. I have had women in my class in their 70’s and 80’s and I am going to tell you they are usually my best students! Why? Because they know who they are, what they like and honestly they do not care about others opinions. They are doing what makes them happy and honestly that is all that matters! So be you your most beautiful, unique self! Be you!

There used to be a point in my life where I did not love my body.  I had suffered a lot of issues that stemmed back into my childhood days.  

This started with not being able to get up from the table until all my food was gone…it didn’t matter if I was hungry or not.  

Going into my teens I heard you thighs are big, you look like a football player, look at those bold legs…get the idea?  This sent me down a spiraling path of destruction…poor body image.  

It took me years to unravel these ideas and thoughts of what I believed to be true.  It has not been easy to say the least.  I’m talking a good 25 years of ups and downs.  

Being a fitness instructor helped but then there was still this idea that I had to be a certain way in regards to my body.

I got into Bellydance Cabaret Style.  All the glitter!  There though was this focus on body image but the way we moved it felt good in my body.  I still struggled.  

In 2010 it really started to change.  I found Global Caravan Bellydance!  This was different!  All where welcome and this is really when I began to understand and love my body!  

I was not just taught dance but about movement and loving yourself for who you are!  Because I’ve struggled and I truly have a passion for helping others; I have developed a 6 month course just for you.

Metamorphosis Through Movement Level 1

*The first 8 weeks

Movement & Play. I will guide you through simple & easy movement. 

 You will be able to move at your own pace and move your body that fits you. There is no right or wrong. To just be your beautiful self.

 We will  move and play. Letting go, gaining self confidence, to feel light and balanced in our skin. 

This will help you bring in more self love and care, relieve tension and raise your confidence and feel empowered.

Metamorphosis Through Healing Level 2

*The second  8 weeks 

Learning to  heal our bodies and mind through more movement, stretching and strengthening the body.  

Incorporating, breath/meditation work. 

Allowing to bring the body and mind back to its natural state, releasing old stories and trauma that does not serve us.  

You will feel lighter, bringing a sense of peace & joy back.

 Metamorphosis Through Dance Level 3

*Final 8 week series

We will explore basic feminine glorious movements of Global Caravan belly dance that are  fun and easy, as we continue to connect our body, mind, increase flexibility & strength.

We will take the movements we have learned while moving and grooving, being playful and having fun to relieve stress and feel good while gaining confidence and having a strong connection in your body.

Have you been dancing with me for awhile? We start a brand new session of our Beginner Level 2 January 1, 2022!

Level Up! GC Style!

 In this level we explore the various and most common drum rhythmns. We will explore the Beledi & Saidi plus more!  We will go over  how to hear the music and how to feel the beat through are body and how to interpret and dance to each one.  We  will also learn how to use finger cymbals (Zills) and incorporate it into our dance adding another layer!  You will learn how to hold & wear the zills, basic zilling such as: 3 3 3 , 3 3 7 and more!  So fun!  We will also add more layers movements and transitions to some of the moves we learned in level one!  Prerequisite for this course:  You must have a solid understanding of movement in Global Caravan 1 and completed.

A Time for Celebration!

A time for celebration as we finish up another year! This year we have seen many challenges and a different way of doing things. This year has been a year of change and one we will never forget!

As, I sit here on my bed typing away capturing my final thoughts of the year and having my coffee and looking back at all the things that I have accomplished it is time to celebrate! It is important to celebrate and remind ourselves of all the good no matter how small or large and to focus on that instead of all the things that may not have worked out so well.

Today I celebrate all the challenges I faced as those challenges pushed me out of my comfort zone and put me on a new path and a new adventure! I celebrate my growth and all of the things I have learned from this past year. Last night, I took some time to write down at least 5 big things I accomplished this year and it felt really good to actually see it on paper and it really put things in perspective! How often do we focus on the good? How often do you celebrate? Do you celebrate you?

Here is my list:

  • moving to a new space with a healing room
  • completed my Master Teacher Training Level 3 for Global Caravan
  • created & taught online classes via zoom
  • developed a 4 week course
  • went through a physic bootcamp course
  • certified in Bellydance Body Fitness, Bootcamp and more
  • Taught my first Tribal Grooves Certification
  • Built my own healing website
  • I stopped working 7 days a week
  • read 12 books
  • created more time and self care for me

Sit down tonight and see if you can come up with at least 5 big things you accomplished. As you can see my list is filled with a lot of different things and these were all big things to me. As we say goodbye to 2020 and hello to 2021 what do you want to bring in to the new year? It is such a perfect time to dream and set those intentions and make it happen!

Coming up in the new year I will be bringing you more certifications so you can really step into your glorious self, more classes and courses online and in person!

We are getting ready to dance it out and it is not too late to join! I have a fun and empowering class called Tribal Grooves (TM). This class is designed to move and just feel good in your body! Are you a dancing queen? I absolutely love to dance and move the body! How about the song Dancing Queen by ABBA? I love that song! I have always loved to dance as long as I could walk! I loved dancing to the radio and singing at the top of my lungs!

I often call my students dancing queens because they truly are! To see them let go and to express themselves without worry or care is a great thing for me to see and a amazing thing for them to feel!

I also love a good dance party with my gals! Do you remember dancing with your gals and not having a care in the world? I do and we so need this now more then ever!

Today we Celebrate

Celebrating All Women today!

Today we celebrate all moms! As we are women we are moms in many forms! We are moms to our kids, pets and even close friends. As a teacher I am a dance mom. I love my students as if they are my own and I care, love and nurture them and pray for their safety.

I also have had many mother figures in my life; not just my mom who brought me into this world! I have a few Aunts that I considered a mom figure and I have a dance mama too! These additional moms give you the same support! They are loving and nurturing and are your cheerleader when you need one but they also give you a kick in the butt as well! I am so fortunate that I have had so many amazing moms in my life and I thank you and love you and I celebrate you not just today but everyday!

Celebrating Mothers day is a once a year celebration but, it got me thinking….why does it have to be only once a year? Why can we not celebrate moms in someway every day? Why can’t we pamper ourselves daily and not just once a year? Are we not that important or worth it?

Today I celebrate you as women and mothers! I celebrate you just not today but every day! Take the time to stop every day and do one thing to love yourself and pamper you! If you know me I am big on self care! It was a hard step as I feel I often need to be super woman! Have you ever felt like that? Do you think you need to do everything? We often care for so many others that we put ourselves on the back burner and then we end up being stressed and tired.

Mothers day we often buy flowers, chocolate, cards and many other things but what if just once a week you went out and did this for yourself? How would that make you feel? Would you feel guilty for buying you something or would it make you feel good and lift your spirits?

Here is a poem I wrote:

What is a mother?

She is strong, loving, nurturing, open, giving and caring. She is a force to be reckoned with. She protects and gives whole heartedly expecting nothing in return. She is often the foundation and the rock. She can be gentle, quick and strong all at one time. She makes everything she does look easy. She loves with every breath and bone of her body. She is the one who cries at night when you are hurting and she is the one that always picks you up when you have fallen. She is there with you at the finish line cheering you on. She believes in you. She is filled with such grace, dignity, love and strength. There is nothing like a the love a mother it is a love that is special and pure!
